What We Think of the PureGuardian SPA50CA Light Therapy Lamp

PureGuardian’s therapy lamp weighs only 1.7 lbs and has dimensions of 5.1” x 6.8” x 9.5”. This is pretty standard for a desktop model, but what sets this one apart is that it has an adjustable tilt in its base so you can get exactly the right angle no matter where you set it down. This model is corded, so you’ll have to consider your access to an outlet as well.

You can choose between blue and white light therapy for each session, and the intensity is adjustable to match what your eyes can handle. There is a timer as well, you can set it between 5 and 30 minutes so you don’t accidentally overextend your session. You will have to turn the machine off manually though, because it doesn’t have an auto-shutoff feature unfortunately. The max intensity is 10,000 lux, which is the industry standard for lamps like these.

This was such a great purchase for my son. He suffers from SAD every year, and I was hoping to help improve his symptoms a bit. He’s found this lamp very easy to use and has mentioned a few changes already. I’m so glad this lamp works as marketed; I would definitely buy it again. Whatever use you have in mind for it, I think it’ll be exactly what you’re looking for. Thanks, PureGuardian.

Emma R.

There are some pretty awesome things we are excited about sharing with you. This machine has a USB port in the side of it to allow you to charge your phone during your therapy session, which is very convenient. The bulbs in this device also will never need replacing; they will last the lifetime of the lamp guaranteed. You will need to use this device about 7” away from your face, but the UV-free light is incredibly safe for your skin.

Luminette 3 Light Therapy Glasses Video Review

What We Think of the Luminette 3 Light Therapy Glasses

The third version of Luminette’s light therapy glasses are their best ones yet. They can fit comfortably on anyone’s face no matter how big their head is, and they sit high enough up that they won’t impair vision; you can even wear your prescription glasses while enjoying your light therapy session. The well balanced nose band lets you conduct your day-to-day activities while receiving therapy, which is the best thing for convenience.

These glasses weigh only 0.1 lbs and have three different light intensities to offer, 500 lux, 1000 lux, and 1500 lux. Since the glasses are so close to your eyes, this is equivalent to the strength of a 10,000 lux desktop version. You only receive blue light therapy with these glasses, so if you’re looking for white light therapy as well, you’ll have to keep looking.

I’ve used a pair of light therapy glasses before, but they weren’t very durable and I didn’t feel like I could do much while wearing them. Plus, I had to take my prescription glasses off to use it which also restricted what I could do. These Luminette glasses actually offer me all of the convenience I expected out of my last pair, and I have been sleeping a lot better since I began using them.

Lena A.

The rechargeable batteries in the glasses have a life of 6 sessions on the highest setting, so you’ll be able to go nearly a week without charging them if they are only being used by one person. There is an auto shutoff after the 30-minute session is over, so you’ll never forget how long you’ve been wearing them. There is a 30 day trial period to let you try them out, and the app can create a personalized usage schedule to best treat your needs.

BAOMING Light Therapy Lamp Review

BAOMING Light Therapy Lamp,Blue Energy Light Lamp,White&Bule Lights,25W Dimmable UV Free 10000 Lux Brightness,Display,Timer Function,Brightness Adjustment, 1-Pack

The Affordable Choice
Baoming

The BAOMING Light Therapy Lamp is one that is affordable, but doesn’t sacrifice on quality in order to bring the price down. It has a great, portable design and all the features you need to get the most out of every single light therapy session.

What We Think of the BAOMING Light Therapy Lamp

When it comes to affordable light therapy lamps, it really doesn’t get better than this BAOMING model. Its most distinguishing feature is its 0.7” width. This makes it incredibly easy to store in a purse or bag to make use of it whenever and wherever you need to. It is freeing feeling to never be restricted by the bulkiness of your therapy machine.

The max lux is 10,000 as is common in desktop models, and you have 5 different intensities to select from to ensure you are comfortable during each treatment. You can also select between blue and white light to get the right benefits for you at the time. There is a timer but no auto shutoff feature, so you’ll just have to turn it off manually after your 15/30/45/60 minute treatment (length is determined by the intensity you choose).

I was pretty surprised by the customizability of this light therapy lamp. I didn’t think I’d find myself using all the different intensity choices, but since I use this lamp at different times of the day, I like having the ability to choose a dimmer setting when it starts to get dark, it’s less hurtful on the eyes. It’s really thin too, so I can keep it in my book bag and hardly even know it’s there.

Owen P.

You also don’t have to use the timer; if you’d prefer to set your own clock, you can allow the machine to run until you shut it off. The light produces by this machine is UV-free in both the blue and white light option, so you won’t receive any unwanted damage to your skin while using this product. The cord is quite short, so you’ll be limited on placement a bit.

AYOlite Light Therapy Glasses Video Review

What We Think of the AYOlite Light Therapy Glasses

Let’s start off by saying how much we enjoy the convenience of these light therapy glasses by AYOlite. They are battery powered, so you never have the hassle of a cord, and there is an auto-shutoff after the 20 minute session is over. You won’t even need a timer. You don’t have the option of choosing white light therapy, but that is pretty common with this style of light therapy light.

These glasses weigh only 0.1 lbs, so they will be very comfortable on your face every time you use them. They do sit quite close to your eyes though, so you may find your vision gets restricted a little bit and you aren’t able to be as mobile as you would expect. This also means you can’t wear them with prescription glasses, so if you are near sighted, you may find you’ve got a bit of a headache from straining to see at a distance while receiving your therapy.

Light therapy glasses were the most genius invention ever, let me tell you. To improve my depression symptoms, I used to have to sit in front of a desktop model for 30 minutes every day, which was incredibly boring. Now, I wear these glasses while I read fiction novels, and I get way more enjoyment out of the treatment. It’s a good thing I don’t wear glasses though, they sit really close to your face.

Jennifer O.

The best thing about this pair of light therapy glasses is its button free operation. They automatically turn on, and will turn off automatically after the session like we mentioned earlier. You will never have any battery waste, and it’s just more convenient. The glasses come with a hard-shelled protective case to allow you peace of mind when travelling. When they come with a higher price tag, you don’t want to risk any damage.

Luminette 2 SAD Bright Light Therapy Glasses Video Review

What We Think of the Luminette 2 SAD Bright Light Therapy Glasses

Luminette’s second generation light therapy glasses are quite similar to the third generation we outlined earlier, but there are some distinct differences. We’ll touch on the similarities first. These glasses also weigh 0.1 lbs and sit above your eyeline, allowing you to wear prescription glasses simultaneously, and you’ll have zero interference when going about your daily routine.

There are also three light intensities to choose from with this model, a 500 lux setting, 1000 lux setting, and 1500 lux setting. All of these are available in blue light only, which is a downside for people looking to get some white light therapy as well. These are powered by rechargeable batteries, but one charge will last 10 sessions instead of only 6, which is a big advantage for many people.

The first thing I want to tell you about these glasses is that the battery really does easily last for 10 sessions, they aren’t inflating that performance. That’s the main reason I chose this pair instead of the competition because I didn’t want to have to charge it every other day. These are incredibly convenient and they really have helped my mood this winter. Very impressed!

Kylie T:

One thing we aren’t too happy about is the durability of the nose piece. This is the component that lets the glasses sit so high on your face, so when it breaks, the glasses are essentially useless. You’ll have to be very careful when handling them to prevent this from happening, and that’s why we are grateful they come with a protective case and a lens cloth. The overall quality is worth the extra price though.

Luminette Drive Light Therapy Lamp Review

Luminette Drive® - First Light Therapy Lamp to be Used in a car - Get rid of Winter Blues and Improve Your Sleep While Driving Your car

The Car-Compatible Alternative
Luminette

If you’ve ever dreamed of having a light therapy session while on your way to work, Luminette’s Drive Light Therapy Lamp is the product for you. It easily attaches to your sun visor to give you the light therapy you need without taking up any of your morning routine time.

What We Think of the Luminette Drive Light Therapy Lamp

If you’ve considered the possibility of receiving light therapy while you drive somewhere in the morning, but figured it couldn’t happen, think again. Luminette offers one unique product in their Drive Light Therapy Lamp. It attaches in as little as two seconds to your sun visor, and you can easily adjust the angle to get the best light direction to your face without compromising your field of vision while driving.

It weighs only 1.2 lbs, so you don’t have to worry about it sliding off the visor because of its own weight. You will only receive blue light from this product, not white light, but the intensity is adjustable so you can adapt it to the surrounding light (a bright setting in the dark is not a good idea). This product is powered by rechargeable batteries that can last for up to a week of use before needing to be charged.

I have a very hectic morning schedule that starts around sunrise, but I’ve wanted to try blue light therapy for some time now. I was so happy when I stumbled across this model that I could use in my car while I head to work. It really wakes me up and it doesn’t impair my driving at all. I could not recommend this more for people who don’t have time for therapy sessions at home in the morning!

Evan P.

The best part is that you only have to turn it on before you start driving. After the 20 minute session is over, the auto shutoff feature takes over and turns the light off for you. This way, you won’t have to pay attention to the time it’s been on or need to fumble with the device while you’re driving to turn it off. Since it clips on and off the visor so easily, you can feel free to keep it with you all day and night to prevent it from being stolen or damaged by extreme weather conditions if left in the car.

Philips GoLite BLU Energy Light Therapy Lamp Review

Blue Light Therapy-Philips GoLite BLU

The Compact Alternative
Philips

If you’re needing some blue light therapy but don’t have the room for a large desktop version, this compact Philips GoLite BLU Energy Light Therapy Lamp is the answer to your prayers. It is very expensive, but offers a high quality, even light distribution to improve your day to day living experience.

What We Think of the Philips GoLite BLU Energy Light Therapy Lamp

It can be difficult to find a desktop-style blue light therapy light that is also small in size and easily portable. That’s where this Philips model comes in to carve out its own niche in the market. It is a circular model that is 5.6” in diameter, and it is less than an inch and a half thick. This makes it the ideal choice for storing in a purse or bag, and it weighs less than a pound too.

You can only get blue light out of this machine, so you don’t have the option of white light therapy like other desktop models offer. However, you have a choice between six different light intensities, allowing you to get the best treatment for how you’re feeling. There isn’t an auto shutoff feature, but the timer will let you know when your session is up so you can turn the machine off manually.

I recently started to work night shifts at a hospital, and I’ve been struggling to adjust my sleeping schedule. I was always tired and slow-thinking, which is a danger in my line of work. I started using this blue light lamp for twenty minutes before each shift and I’ve noticed a remarkable improvement in my alertness and cognitive function. Great purchase.

Sara E.

This little unit is powered by rechargeable batteries, so that’s another exception to the standards of desktop models. It does come with a high quality protective case, and the UV-free light emitted by this lamp is very evenly distributed to prevent glare and bright spots. Although incredibly expensive, likely more than you ever imagined paying for a therapy light, its quality does stack up to its price tag.

Philips GoLite BLU Energy Light Therapy Lamp Specifications

  • Dimensions: 5.6” x 5.6” x 1.4”

Things to Know Before Buying a Blue Light Therapy Light

Benefits of Using a Blue Light Therapy Light

Blue light therapy has a wide array of uses, including treatment for jaundice in newborns and even some skin disorders. The therapy lights we discuss in this guide are meant for another use of blue light, and that refers to conditions such as seasonal affective disorder, depression, sleep disorders, and even jetlag. Even twenty minutes a day can help relieve many symptoms of these conditions. Since blue light therapy targeted at the eyes inhibits melatonin production, blue light therapy sessions in the mornings can help you feel more awake and help your body get back on its natural, regulated sleep-wake cycle. Blue light therapy also helps boost your mood and is often used to treat both general depression year round, and the more season-specific form of depression known as seasonal affective disorder. If you suffer from sleep disorders, blue light therapy can help with that too due to its effects on the sleep cycle. If you live in areas with limited access to sunlight (think north and south poles, submarine crews, etc.), blue light therapy can help your body maintain its cycles and feel more awake during your days.

How to Safely Receive Blue Light Therapy Treatment

Blue light therapy is an incredibly safe procedure, and there are only a few steps you must follow to protect your eyes from any damage. Firstly, you need to maintain an appropriate distance from the light source. Light boxes are much stronger than wearable glasses, so they should remain around 7” away from your face at all times. Wearable, glasses-style blue light therapy lights have lower intensities and are therefore safe to be closer to your eyes, and they have the same effectiveness. The second piece of the puzzle is to never look directly at the light. You’ll want the light aimed directly at you and you need to keep your eyes open for it to be effective, but looking directly into the light source can do more harm than good.

How to Properly Choose Your Blue Light Therapy Light

  1. Price.

Wearable blue light therapy lights are generally more expensive than the box versions and will cost around $200. They have more sophisticated technology and are incredibly convenient, so any people find them worth the price. If your needs are simpler, a cheaper, box-style light is best for you. These will cost approximately $50 to $100.

  1. Size.

The size of your blue light lamp will affect its portability and how easily you can find a good location to receive your therapy treatments. Obviously, all of the wearable glasses will be roughly the same size, so this discussion is more for box style lights. There are some box style lights that are incredibly thin, and these are great for stowing in purses or bags to travel with, but they do take up more desk space. Then you have rounder, more compact lights which require a smaller space for placement, but are a bit bulky to travel with.

  1. Lux.

The lux value of a therapy light refers to the intensity of the light it can produce. The higher this value, the greater the intensity, and the more effective it can be in shorter durations. If you prefer longer treatment times, a lower lux value is acceptable. However, for a standard 20 minute treatment, a 10,000 lux light is ideal. Glasses-style lights will have lux values between 500 and 1500, which is more than adequate since they are so close to the eyes.

  1. Timer.

Many blue light therapy lights will have timers built in to let you know when the treatment session is over. Many will also have an automatic shutoff after the timer has reached zero, but some will require you to manually turn them off. The more sophisticated the technology, the more expensive the light will be, so that’s something you’ll have to balance for yourself.

  1. Adjustable Brightness.

Dimmable light therapy lights are a great idea for people just starting to get into light therapy. It may take some time to adjust to the process, and you’ll want to start off at a lower setting for a longer duration. As you become more confident, you can crank up the intensity for a shorter duration treatment. Not all lamps will have this feature though, so you’ll have to decide if it’s worth the extra money.

  1. Additional Colour Choices.

Some blue light therapy lights will offer you a choice between blue light therapy and white light therapy, which we appreciate because they have different beneficial effects and uses. Most glasses-style light therapy lights will only offer blue light, so that is a restriction you’ll face if going that direction.

  1. Wearable vs. Desktop.

There are two main styles of light therapy lights. There are wearable/glasses-style lights, and desktop/box style lights. The wearable lights are less durable but much more portable than the desktop versions, but they will also cost a significant amount more. The convenience of them is well worth the expense though. Desktop style lights produce stronger light but need to be used at a distance from your face, and they’ll require you to sit on one place for the duration of the treatment.

  1. Warranty.

As with all products related to your health, we love a good warranty package, and you should prioritize that when shopping for your blue light therapy light. Many models have at least one year of warranty protection, so don’t settle for a model that offers you nothing.
